Back to Basics Series – Design basics for better marketing

23rd September @ 12:00 pm - 12:45 pm

September feels like the right time to go back to school, right? No matter how long we’ve been out of education, September rolls around and it feels like a fresh start and an opportunity to learn something new.

But what about re-learning things we already know? Or brushing up on the basics that we never really fully covered while juggling everything else?

This September we’re taking you back to the drawing board with a webinar series designed to refresh your knowledge of some of the fundamentals of marketing.

The three-part webinar series will help you hit reset, sharpen your skills, and feel more confident in your day-to-day marketing. We’ll cover the essentials — copywriting, strategy, and design, without the jargon, so you can take a brief step back from the ‘doing’ and remind yourself of the foundations that really matter.

In this second session, we’re taking you back to basics of design in marketing. Now, we’re not saying marketers need to be designers. In fact, marketing and design are two completely different skill sets.

But the reality is that a lot of marketers are one-person teams, or teams of 2 or 3 and in order to create great marketing, a foundational knowledge of the principles of good design goes a long way.

Whether you’re creating social posts, email campaigns or producing creative briefs for design agencies, it’s important to know the basics!

Meet the hosts:

Margaret Ward is the founder of Claddagh Creative, a specialist email marketing agency working with brands across the UK, US, and beyond to turn their email lists into their most valuable asset. With a decade of experience across the full e-commerce and B2C supply chain, she’s helped businesses from start-ups to 8-figure brands grow through data-driven strategy and creative storytelling. Alongside running her agency, Margaret works as a marketing consultant, mentors artisan businesses, and speaks on email marketing, entrepreneurship, and building a business through brand marketing in today’s competitive landscape.

Jessica Roberts is the Creative Lead at Wirral Met College. A graduate of the University of Chester, Jessica has held several design roles in some of Merseyside’s leading further education providers. In her current role, she has successfully led award-winning education campaigns, including the recent rebranding of Wirral Met College. Her specialisms include, brand, editorial and digital design.

With over five years in the creative industry, Martina Gordeen has built a career at the intersection of strategy, culture, and community. Starting as a blogger at 14, she has honed her expertise in marketing, brand partnerships, and event curation; helping brands such as Wray and Nephew UK, DLT Brunch, and UK Black Business Show connect authentically with their audiences.

Her work has earned industry recognition, including being named in the Alt Marketing School Top 100 Marketers (2024), MYBLAQBOOK’s International Women’s Day Trailblazer List (2024) and Pitch Fanzine’s Super People (2023).

In this session, we’ll cover:

  • The core design principles that make things look polished (without overcomplicating it)
  • How to keep your visuals consistent and on-brand
  • Simple tips for creating better content, even with beginner tools

You’ll come away with a sharper eye for design and more confidence to bring your ideas to life.
